Tuia - Thuja occidentalis

La Tuia

The common name for thuya is a small genus belonging to the conifer group and the Cupressaceae family. Its origin is located along the Pacific coast in North America - from Alaska to California - and in East Asia. In nature it looks like a medium-sized tree, being able to reach a height of about 40 meters. It has a columnar habit and is equipped with flattened branches with a covering of scaly leaves.

The thuja they are beautiful specimens of the evergreen type and, in the past, their wood was frequently used by American Indians for various jobs, such as the construction of houses, but also of canoes and the famous poles that gave life to the totem poles. This wood was preferred to others because, at the same time, it possesses characteristics of strength, lightness and durability.

Thuja species

There are three most widespread species: the thuja giant, or thuja plicata - the most common - which reaches heights of about 25 or 30 meters in our country and has very rapid growth and ornamental use. The tops of its branches are solid to the touch with a reddish color and the bark of the young branches also has a red hue. The western thuja, or thuja occidentalis, famous for its dense woods, on the verge of penetrability, which it forms in North America when it grows in several closely spaced specimens. It is a beautiful rustic plant that grows slowly to 15 meters in height. It also has an ornamental use and includes different varieties, such as the columnaris, the globosa, the pendola, the aurea. Some of these are dwarf plants that form popular round bushes that decorate rock gardens. Finally, the oriental thuja, or thuja orientalis, originally from the East of the world: northern and western China and Korea. It is a shrubby and rustic plant, with a height ranging from 6 to 8 meters and is particularly appreciated for the formation of hedges with leaf branches with vertical arrangement.

Leaves and cones

The giant thuja has bright green leaves on the upper side, paler on the lower side. These are composed of small flattened twigs and, if they are crushed, they release a very pleasant aromatic and fruity smell into the air. The foliage is very similar to that of ferns: it has scales pressed against the branches, so that the smaller twigs end up being covered and hidden. Over time, as the branches mature, the leaf scales age, take on a reddish brown color and then fall off. The cones of the western thuja are brown-yellow in color, with few scales and are found only in adult specimens. The western thuja has leaves with a dark green color in the upper part, closer to yellow in the lower part. The odor given off by the foliage is more resinous. Its cones are smaller than the previous species and are formed from tender scales with a herbaceous consistency. Finally, the oriental thuja has small ovoid-shaped leaves, arranged on vertical branches. The cones of the plant are fewer than the previous ones. They have a green-brown color and are made up of thick scales.

Cultivation and soil

The thuja they grow happily in fertile soil that has a particular ability to retain moisture and is sufficiently sheltered from strong winds. It also tolerates very calcareous soils. It is advisable to plant small specimens, which do not exceed 60 centimeters in height: plants of this size take root in a much better way. If grown as an isolated specimen, preferably in areas sheltered from the wind and humid, it grows with a large expansion of the crown, always conical in shape. If it is cultivated, on the other hand, it forms particularly dense and dense hedges.

Watering and fertilization

An important advice concerns the younger specimens: the soil around them must be kept moist and constantly covered with mulch made up of organic material.

Pruning

It tolerates pruning without excessive hassle, and can be successfully maintained from an aesthetic point of view with a neat and narrow shape. It is therefore possible to make thuja an individual tree suitable for the turf even in a small garden, or to give it a pyramidal shape keeping its foliage down to ground level, topped to the preferred size.

Parasites

When the thuja is still in the seedling stage, severe damage can be caused by the Didymascella thujina fungus, which causes a lethal fungal disease. To protect against this threat, it would therefore be preferable to grow the seedlings in isolated nurseries. Other dangerous attacks, when the plant has grown, can come from the fungal canker of the cypress - which causes problems to leaves and fronds, with subsequent drying and fall - or from the scale insects and the spider of the conifers.

Curiosity

In the event that the lower branches are pruned when the foliage of the tree is in good health and is bright green, these can be used by florists for the composition of wreaths.

The giant thuja, or plicata, is also known as "arbor vitae", the tree of life by virtue of its suggestive evergreen foliage.
